Traditions and Diversity

Events, songs, stories and treasured items are powerful reminders of why traditions are so important. Handed down from generation to generation, traditions connect people to their family, religious and/or cultural history. Whether the traditions you celebrate are recently developed or ancient rituals, they provide a fundamental link to your past, present and future. This link provides a deep sense of belonging, a basic human need.

During this festive time of year, many diverse families, religious and cultural rituals are celebrated. Sharing specific traditions with youngsters--your own plus those of others--is a very natural way to then discuss the larger panorama of culture, history, diversity and family.

In a child care setting, parents, providers and youngsters can all contribute to a circle time activity with traditional stories, songs, clothing, foods and memorabilia. Enhance these activities with books and PBS Kids programs.

Parents should talk about family traditions around special meals or cultural activities reflecting timely rituals. Take advantage of the many events and celebrations happening in your area. Share your traditions and rituals with others. Most of all, enjoy this season of goodwill!
