Science and Mathematics

Young children are naturally interested and curious about the world around them. Their observations and eager questions encourage further exploration and discovery. As with mathematics, everyday experiences offer rich opportunities to introduce young children to science. A question about a cloud, ant trails or a growing plant demonstrates a child's interest in a subject and is a good place to begin a conversation about science. Follow that with a related book, an age-appropriate activity and a PBS Kids program connected to the topic.

As youngsters explore science in different ways, including their own child-directed observations or adult-guided activities, their discoveries will encourage them to keep asking questions and stay curious about the world around them.

Caring adults can create a home or school environment that encourages scientific exploration with numerous household items, including flashlights, magnets and fabric samples. Plants, insects and small animals are fun to observe and study. Happy exploring and discovering!
