Physical Development and Health

"A healthy, alert and energetic child is able to give their full attention to learning experiences...." --Alameda County First 5 Commission

Most adults agree that good health is essential to enjoying a quality life. However, current disturbing trends surfacing as childhood health problems, such as obesity and diabetes, suggest there is a critical need for community, school and family health education.

Children learn by example. Caring adults should seize daily opportunities to introduce and model good health practices for youngsters. Health- and theme-based activities should be integrated into curricula. Approach good health practices as you would any subject -- thoughtfully and creatively. Read related books and share stories; provide nutritious snacks; limit sugar; make low-fat choices when cooking; encourage more water drinking; promote physical exercise, music, movement and, of course, the interactive PBS KIDS series Barney & Friends and Teletubbies.

In order for youngsters to fully participate in physical activities, they need plenty of  nourishing food and rest -- fuel for and restoration of their growing bodies. A healthy child is ready to learn!
