About Utah!
This is a true story. My boyfriend and I spent the month of June in
Utah, avoiding all the chaos of Gay pride. Seeing an entire year's
worth of queer cultural programming packed into a few weeks is
disquieting, so we leave town. We're nature people. Southern Utah is
part of an ancient ocean floor. The sea has come and gone many times.
There's something very humbling about walking on a salt flat. You know
you're just a blip, that humans are careening toward extinction. This
is a performance essay.
Kirk Read is a writer and storyteller who grew up in Virginia and lives
in San Francisco. His memoir, How I Learned to Snap, was named an
Honor Book by the American Library Association. He works as a peer
counselor and phlebotomist at St. James Infirmary, a free health care
clinic for sex workers. He tours as a performer and curates literary
events around San Francisco.
