Each month KQED Interactive visits a number of Bay Area art galleries to check out what's up in the local art scene. You can view a video of what we found.
In October, we scouted out a few vastly different solo exhibitions in downtown San Francisco galleries -- from realist paintings and abstract collages to whimsical crocheted art. These included Will Wilson Recent Oil Paintings at John Pence Gallery; Seth Koen: Around the Corner at Gregory Lind Gallery; and Gustavo Ramos Rivera: The Poetics of Painting Paintings, Monotypes and Collages 1981-2005 at the Hackett-Freedman Gallery.
The John Pence Gallery is San Francisco's largest gallery, including more than 8,000 square feet of exhibition space. Since the late 1970s, the gallery has focused on exhibiting the work of living academic realists (painters and sculptures) and also presents significant works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The exhibit, Will Wilson Recent Oil Paintings (October 7 through November 5, 2005) features more than 30 works by this meticulous painter. San Francisco artist Wilson only creates approximately 8-10 works each year. His subjects include figures, florals, still lifes and animals -- in the tradition of the great Dutch Masters and the American Masters Harnett and Peto -- with his own playful sense of humor. Where: 750 Post St., San Francisco Gallery hours: 11am to 5pm, Tuesday through Saturday Phone: (415) 441-1138
Established in 2002, the Gregory Lind Gallery exhibits contemporary work by emerging and mid-career artists from around the world who push the material boundaries of their art.
Seth Koen: Around the Corner (September 8 through October 22, 2005) is a playful exhibit of Koen's ambiguous crocheted forms that defy utility. Bay Area artist Koen uses simple materials and tools -- yarn, thread, muslin, lentils, needle, hook to present a provocative challenge to those who would insist on a clear separation between "art" and "craft."
Where: 49 Geary St., 5th Floor, San Francisco Gallery hours: 10:30am to 5:30pm, Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment only Phone: (415) 296-9661
The Hackett-Freedman represents some of the most important and historic periods of American painting and sculpture -- American Modernism, Post-War Abstract Expressionism, Bay Area Figurative Movement and contemporary realist painters.
Gustavo Ramos Rivera: The Poetics of Painting Paintings, Monotypes and Collages 1981-2005 (September 15 through October 29, 2005) is a three-decade survey of the paintings and monotypes by Gustavo Ramos Rivera. This show surveys features his paintings, monotypes, and mixed-media collages and coincides with Ramos Rivera's current traveling retrospective in Mexico at the Ex Convento del Carmen, Guadalajara, and the Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Figueres, Zacatecas.
