Writing the poem sounds like a great way to get them to think about the experience. Where do you teach?

You are correct. This fly by guest speakers spark something in a student that I myself could never do. I do not have the access to the fancy "real" science tools that you have. I have had the Marine Science Institute in my class before and after their presentations I make the students right a poem about what they learned. Now writing a poem isn't an easy task, let alone write one about something you experienced for a short amount of time. Amazingly the students not only wrote an amazing poem, but they also showed what the learned. I have no doubt that having guest speakers in class make a HUGE impact on student learning and retention of material. I would give my left leg to have you in my class! I teach life science ;) Come on down anytime you want.
