The Willie Brown Years: Press Release

KQED PUBLIC BROADCASTING LAUNCHES MULTI-MEDIA INITIATIVE EXAMINING THE WILLIE BROWN YEARS

Various Programs Available on KQED Public Television, KQED Public Radio and KQED.org

San Francisco, California -- As Willie Brown's tenure as Mayor of San Francisco draw to a close, KQED Public Broadcasting will premiere multi-platform programming examining "the lightning rod of San Francisco politics over the past eight years" on KQED Public Television, KQED Public Radio, and KQED.org.

On KQED Public Television, The Willie Brown Years, hosted by veteran journalist Belva Davis, will air Tuesday, January 6 at 7:30PM, repeating Sunday, January 11 at 2:30PM. More details follow.

KQED Public Radio will offer extended reporting on the mayoral transition the week of and leading up to the Thursday, January 8th inauguration of Mayor-elect Gavin Newsom. Mayor Brown will be on Forum on Tuesday, January 6 at 9AM for a wide-ranging conversation with host Michael Krasny about Brown's political career.

KQED.org will host extended related coverage, including a full transcript of the television interview, with segments not seen in The Willie Brown Years, as well as audio links to all related KQED coverage of the mayoral race from programs such as This Week in Northern California and Forum. Also available online is an archived Nov. 4 retrospective on Brown's two terms as San Francisco Mayor, in which The California Report's Host, Scott Shafer, presents Brown's own reflections alongside comments from supporters and critics of the outgoing Mayor.

In The Willie Brown Years, Brown reflects on his time in City Hall beginning with the high expectations he set on inauguration day, which were then tempered by political reality: "Well you just wear out, you know you get overexposed. You over promise and optimism grows higher than you are ever capable of delivering, and with my grand utterances sometimes it even goes beyond that."

In the program, Brown addresses his sometimes bitter relationship with the local media and investigations into his administration: "....there is a race factor in everything. I don't care what they say, it's for me, you, everybody else, there is a race factor....And I suspect more than anything else Belva, any investigation to me starts not from any conduct, it starts from a suspicion based upon the color of the skin, an allegation usually made by some news organization that prompts an independent investigation."

Brown also discusses his accomplishments in office ranging from the renovation of the quake-damaged City Hall to construction of the new international terminal at San Francisco International Airport. Finally, he offers advice to the new mayor including ideas on how to solve the homelessness problem.

KQED Public Broadcasting operates KQED Public Television 9, one of the nation's most-watched public television stations during prime-time, and KQED's digital television channels, which include KQED HD, KQED Encore, KQED World, KQED Life and KQED Kids; KQED Public Radio, the most-listened-to public radio station in the nation with an award-winning news and public affairs program service (88.5 FM in San Francisco and 89.3 FM in Sacramento); KQED.org, one of the most visited station sites in Public Broadcasting; and KQED Education Network, which brings the impact of KQED to thousands of teachers, students, parents and media professionals through workshops, seminars and resources.
