| Independent View: Landmark Theaters |
Throughout Landmark Theatres, the nation's largest art-house chain, features first-run independent and foreign films and non-traditional studio fare in 53 theaters representing 167 screens in 11 states. In the Bay Area, Landmark operates 15 theatres representing 41 screens. In exhibiting indie hits such as Shakespeare in Love, The Blair Witch Project, Life is Beautiful and Run Lola Run, Landmark has also never veered from its commitment to present cutting edge entertainment or shied away from controversial films, such as The Last Temptation of Christ or Romance.
Throughout its history, Landmark has built a reputation for fresh and innovative marketing strategies that have become its trademark today. Special events, such as Q & As with directors, short film festivals, documentary, matinee and midnight series, also became part of Landmark's signature style, which has also occasionally meant offering exhibition and marketing opportunities to up-and-coming filmmakers. Current plans call for more multiplexes in New York City, Dallas and the Washington, D.C. area -- which will bring Landmark's screen total to more than 190 nationwide. Still, no matter how large it grows, the circuit continues to operate hand-in-hand with local communities to support the art of film.
