Immigration in Focus: Public Forum on Bay Area Immigration: Press Release

Featuring a panel discussion, media presentations and dance performances from Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, Black Alliance for Just Immigration, and KQED

Wednesday, December 13 at 5:30 p.m. the San Francisco Public Main Library Panel discussion to be translated into Spanish

SAN FRANCISCO, November 29, 2006 -- In collaboration with the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation and the Black Alliance for Just Immigration and other community partners, KQED presents "Bay Area Immigration: Where We've Been and Who We Are Now," a public forum on Wednesday, December 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Public Main Library.

Panelists Bill Ong Hing, Professor of Law & Asian American Studies at University of California at Davis, and Nu Nu Kadani of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration will lead a lively discussion about how the history of immigration affects who we are today and what this means for the Bay Area.
Specifically, they will address the following topics:
  • Many Bay Area immigrants aren't aware of the diverse history of immigration that preceded them. The Bay Area has been home to many large immigrant populations stretching back almost 200 years. Large black, Chinese, Irish, Japanese, Latino and Russian communities settled in the Bay Area and started new lives. Why did they immigrate and when did they arrive? Which immigrant communities live in the Bay Area now?
  • Are certain communities left out of the immigration conversation and debate? Do African Americans consider themselves immigrants or migrants? What experiences do new African immigrants encounter? Where does this leave American Indians?
"The Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation is honored to once again partner with KQED on a timely and important project," said Daphne Kwok, executive director of Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation. "Utilizing the Angel Island Immigration Station as a national and local historical asset is an appropriate way to begin a dialogue on immigration in the Bay Area and remember our past as we work towards improving our future."

"The Black Alliance for Just Immigration is proud to collaborate with KQED because their programs and events put a human face on the immigration debate," said Gerald Lenoir, coordinator of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration. "It forces us to consider how the decisions we make impact people and families."

KQED's community partners include: the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, the Bay Area Immigrant Rights Coalition, the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, the Chinese Historical Society of America, the Irish Immigration and Pastoral Center, the National Japanese American Historical Society, and the San Francisco Main Public Library.

The panel discussion will be translated into Spanish. Childcare for ages 3-10 is provided for those who reserve a spot prior to the event. Space is limited for the event as well, and reservations are strongly encouraged. To RSVP or reserve a spot for childcare, please call (415) 553-2810.

The event is a part of KQED's Immigration in Focus (www.kqed.org/immigrationinfocus), a year-long collection of thought-provoking programs, special reports and events about the complex issues surrounding immigration. With California at the center of the immigration debate, KQED recognizes the need for accurate, balanced information and provides a platform for productive and inclusive dialogue from all perspectives. Funding is generously provided by the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund (www.haasjr.org).

The mission of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation (AIISF) is to promote a greater understanding of how Pacific Coast immigration has shaped America's past, present and future. Through an array of interpretive programs and educational partnerships, the Foundation preserves the Immigration Station site, a National Historic Landmark, as a place that honors the complex story and rich cultural heritage of Pacific Coast immigrants and their descendants. For more AIISF information, call (415) 561-2160 or visit the Web site at www.haasjr.org. Participation of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation is made possible by grants from the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr. Fund and the Walter & Elise Haas Fund.
