Immigration in Focus: Press Release

KQED Launches Immigration in Focus

KQED Public Television, Public Radio, Education Network and KQED.org examine immigration in the Bay Area during year-long initiative

SAN FRANCISCO, October 19, 2006 -- KQED announces Immigration in Focus, a multimedia collection of thought-provoking programs, special reports and events about the complex issues surrounding immigration. With California at the center of the immigration debate, KQED recognizes the need for accurate, balanced information and provides a platform for productive and inclusive dialogue from all perspectives.

"One of the most divisive policy debates today centers on immigration, particularly in the Bay Area where immigrants make up nearly one-third of the population," said KQED President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Clarke. "KQED is committed to delivering content and services that encourage our viewers and listeners to broaden their perspectives on immigration issues and engage individuals who are often left out of discussions about them in our communities. We will use all of our media platforms to inform and give historical, social and political context to the topic of immigration via this very important project."

A sample of Immigration in Focus programs and services includes:

KQED Public Television will produce special reports and segments examining the ways that immigration impacts our communities and civic institutions. Immigrant Voices -- American Stories, the first of two half-hour documentaries about immigrants in the Bay Area, premieres on Friday, November 24 at 7:30pm. This Week in Northern California, KQED's long-running public affairs program, will offer insightful roundtable discussions and analysis of the latest immigration news, from the point of view of Bay Area reporters.

KQED Public Radio will develop programming that explores public concerns about immigration and demonstrates the power of compelling storytelling. A special two-hour Forum, KQED's award-winning weekday public affairs program, will delve into the process of becoming a U.S. citizen and what citizenship means. KQED Radio News and its statewide news service The California Report will continue to regularly cover the immigrant experience and immigration policies. Perspectives, KQED's personal commentary series, will produce audio essays allowing individuals in the immigrant community to tell their personal stories.

KQED Education Network (EdNet) will embark on a public engagement and outreach campaign that includes public screenings, facilitated community dialogue and workshops. Utilizing KQED television and radio programs, EdNet will partner with community coalitions, immigrant organizations, employers, policy makers and educational groups to foster public understanding of complex immigration issues. Discussion guides will be developed for use in public screenings, staff development and community-building. Standards-based lesson plans will also be available for classroom use in early 2007.

KQED Interactive created a Web portal (www.kqed.org/immigrationinfocus) that will feature on-demand streaming of Immigration in Focus television and radio broadcasts in their entirety, as well as archived clips of past immigration-related programs. The site serves as a valuable source of information about local and national issues highlighting the best materials from KQED, PBS and NPR. KQED also plans to develop an original interactive feature to engage online users.

"KQED chronicles the shared and divergent realities and challenges of Californians, and therefore immigration and the lives of immigrants are central to our mission and part of our everyday work," said Raul Ramirez, director of news and public affairs for KQED Public Radio. "Immigration in Focus is a unique opportunity for us to examine the rich cultural tapestry that makes up our communities and to provide our audiences with a better understanding of the experiences of our many neighbors."

KQED's Immigration in Focus is supported by a generous grant from the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund (www.haasjr.org).

KQED Public Broadcasting, a service of Northern California Public Broadcasting, operates KQED Public Television 9, one of the nation's most-watched public television stations during prime-time, and KQED's digital television channels, which include KQED HD, KQED Encore, KQED World, KQED Life and KQED Kids; KQED Public Radio, the most-listened-to public radio station in the nation with an award-winning news and public affairs program service (88.5 FM in San Francisco and 89.3 FM in Sacramento); KQED.org one of the most visited station sites in Public Broadcasting; and KQED Education Network, which brings the impact of KQED to thousands of teachers, students, parents and media professionals through workshops, seminars and resources.
