GREAT PERFORMANCES to Telecast San Francisco Opera's New Production of "The Merry Widow"

KQED Co-Produced, Taped Performance to be Broadcast Nationally in Fall 2002

San Francisco, California, November 27, 2001 -- PBS's Great Performances will present a telecast of San Francisco Opera's new production of Lehár's "The Merry Widow," which opens November 27 at the War Memorial Opera House. Three performances -- December 2, 5 and 8 -- will be taped in high-definition television (HDTV) by KQED for a telecast to air nationally in the fall of 2002 on PBS. The production will also be released commercially on DVD.

Conducted by Erich Kunzel and directed by Lotfi Mansouri, performances will include soprano Yvonne Kenny as Anna Glawari, mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager as Valencienne, tenor Gregory Turay as Camille de Rosillon and baritone Bo Skovhus as Count Danilo. Sets for this new production are by Michael Yeargan, with costumes by Thierry Bosquet, lighting by Jennifer Tipton and choreography by Lawrence Pech. The new dialogue script commission by San Francisco Opera is by award-winning dramatist Wendy Wasserstein.

The telecast of "The Merry Widow" will be a co-production with KQED San Francisco, BBC Worldwide, Opus Arte and Thirteen/WNET in New York. KQED and San Francisco Opera most recently collaborated on the upcoming national broadcast of And Then One Night: The Making of "Dead Man Walking," to premiere on PBS Monday, January 14 at 10 p.m.
