KQED PUBLIC TELEVISION NAMES SCOTT SHAFER AS NEW HOST OF BAY WINDOW
San Francisco, CA, March 9, 2001KQED Public Television 9 has announced that Scott Shafer, the current anchor of KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM's The California Report, has assumed the role of host of Bay Window, KQED's flagship series focusing on important issues affecting the lives of Bay Area residents.
Shafer joined KQED in 1998 as host of KQED Public Radio's The California Report, a position he will maintain. Since that time, the program has expanded from a twice-weekly broadcast to a daily series that provides coverage of issues, trends and public policy decisions affecting California and its diverse population. It is carried by more than 30 public radio stations, from Arcata to San Diego. Shafer has also served as host of KQED Public Radio's statewide call-in show on health topics, Health Dialogues, as well as host of statewide coverage of election nights and political debates. He appears occasionally as a guest host of KQED's news program Forum.
A graduate of Cornell University and recipient of numerous awards and honors for journalistic excellence, Shafer brings with him more than 15 years of experience in California politics, government and media, including his former position as chief of staff for thenState Controller Gray Davis, and his position as press secretary to former San Francisco mayor Art Agnos, where he managed city communications during the 1989 earthquake. His journalistic career includes onstage conversations as a part of the "City Arts and Lectures" series where his interviews have included such prominent figures as Tipper Gore, Annie Proulx, Gore Vidal, Edmund White, Ken Burns and Leslie Stahl.
"Scott Shafer's firsthand experience and expert knowledge of California's political, social and cultural landscape make him the ideal host of Bay Window," stated Sue Ellen McCann, executive producer. "We are thrilled that he has agreed to be a part of Bay Window's third season."
Bay Window is an award-winning, monthly series exploring issues that affect our lives in the Bay Area and reflect civic life nationwide. Through television, print, the Web and outreach programs, Bay Window engages people in dialogue, convenes critical stakeholders and builds new connections within our communities.
In March, Bay Window presented "Raising a Ruckus: New Activism and the Response to Globalization," which looked at the new faces of anti-globalization activism and how the Bay Area has been instrumental in its rise. In April, Bay Window will host a roundtable dialogue with prominent local mayors to highlight problems and issues specific to life in the Bay Area, and to discuss how people and their elected officials can work together to address these concerns. In May, Bay Window will partner with the Center for Investigative Reporting to present "Gun Shots" a hard-hitting documentary examining the issues of gun violence and safety in our neighborhoods.
