PUBLIC RADIO
KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM Conducts a "Physical Exam" of California's Healthcare System

FORUM With Michael Krasny Hosts Special Live Remote Broadcast From St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA, June 11, 2001 -- Arguably second only to the energy crunch in its direct impact on residents of California is the growing crisis of the state's healthcare and hospital system. Some of the problems and issues are not unique to the Bay Area or even the state of California -- lack of funding for aging public hospitals, cut-backs in emergency room staff, a severe shortage of nurses, public versus private hospitals. However, some of the concerns are specific to the region, such as the state mandate for hospital retrofitting by 2008 to the tune of 12 billion dollars.

On Monday, June 25th from 9-11 a.m., FORUM with Michael Krasny will be remote-broadcast from the solarium of St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco. The program will focus on the crisis issues of hospitals and healthcare, looking at Bay Area hospitals in the context of problems facing the entire state. The first hour will highlight structural issues: profits, mergers of hospitals, nursing shortages, seismic upgrades leading to limited access and other operational issues. The second hour will focus on access to care issues: insured versus uninsured patients, social/cultural/linguistic barriers, and patients' use of emergency rooms as their primary access to healthcare even as these services are being scaled back.

A wide range of perspectives will be presented by the guests of the show who represent such organizations as Kaiser Permanente, the California Medical Association, the California Healthcare Association, the California Nurses' Association and the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. The event held at St. Luke's Hospital is open to the public and, as always, FORUM's listeners are encouraged to phone in during the show to take part in this discussion of issues important to all Californians.

FORUM is a live public affairs program broadcast in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout Northern California. This award-winning program presents balanced discussions of local, state, national, and world issues as well as in-depth interviews with leading figures in politics, science, entertainment and the arts. It airs Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. on KQED 88.5FM. FORUM's listeners are invited to call in during the show at 415-863-2476. The toll-free number is 866-733-6786 (866-SF FORUM).

Host Michael Krasny is a professor of literature at San Francisco State University and has 20 years of experience as a radio and television host. He is known for his professionalism, his thorough research, and his intelligent approach to handling a diverse range of subjects.
