| KQED Public Radio To Present First Statewide Gubernatorial Debate Between Davis And Simon |
The California Report's Scott Shafer to Lead Post-Debate Analysis
Race Receiving Record-Low in Voter Support
San Francisco, California, October 2, 2002 -- On Monday, October 7 at 12 noon, KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM will broadcast the first gubernatorial debate between Governor Gray Davis and Republican challenger Bill Simon in the 2002 election campaign season. Sponsored by the Los Angeles Times and presented statewide by KQED, this hour-long debate will air statewide on public radio as a special presentation of The California Report. It will be followed by a half-hour of in-depth commentary and analysis led by host Scott Shafer. The 90-minute program will be rebroadcast at 6 p.m. that evening. In addition, KQED Public Television 9 will televise the debate -- without analysis -- at 2 p.m.
According to a poll conducted by the Los Angeles Times during the last week of September, Governor Davis has opened up a lead on Simon, although a majority of those surveyed expressed disappointment with both candidates. The poll found that voters are frustrated with Davis' management of the state budget and the energy crisis, but they also have concerns about Simon's ability to lead the state.
Jo Anne Wallace, vice president and general manager of KQED Public Radio, noted that "one of the things that makes this gubernatorial race interesting is that voters are becoming less and less supportive of both candidates as the election date nears. Davis and Simon will be looking to reverse that trend in this debate."
The California Report is a daily statewide news and public affairs program produced by KQED Public Radio and broadcast on 26 primary public radio stations and more than 25 public radio translators and repeaters across the state.
KQED operates KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM, the most-listened-to public radio station in the nation; KQED Public Television 9, the nation's most-watched public television station, and Digital Television 9, Northern California's only public television digital signal; the KQED Education Network, which brings the impact of KQED to thousands of teachers, students, parents and media professionals through workshops, seminars and resources; and kqed.org, which harnesses the power of the Internet to bring KQED to communities across the Web.
