More Than 30 Television and Radio Programs to Air
Four Local Leaders to Receive Recognition in Awards Ceremony on June 25
San Francisco, California, June 9, 2003 -- Throughout June KQED Public Broadcasting celebrates Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month with KQED sponsored events, special programming, and an awards ceremony and public reception honoring local community leaders. As part of KQED Public Television's commitment to diverse communities LGBT Pride Month will feature over 30 programs that look at the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender experience through cultural, political, and artistic prisms. Airing on Independent Lens for the first time is the groundbreaking documentary Daddy and Papa by Bay Area filmmaker Johnny Symons. This documentary explores the growing phenomenon of Gay fathers and their impact on American culture. From surrogacy and interacial adoption to the complexities of Gay divorce, Daddy and Papa presents a revealing look at the ever-changing landscape of the American family. Airs Tuesday, June 10 at 10pm, repeats Thursday, June 12 at 1am
ImageMakers, a new KQED Public Television weekly series, showcases narrative and documentary works by emerging moviemakers. For LGBT pride month ImageMakers presents three short films by local filmmakers. Trevor, directed by Peggy Rajski, Traveling Companion, written and directed by Paula Goldberg (with Kristin Davis from Sex and the City), and Alkali, Iowa, written and directed by Broderick Fox airs Sunday, June 22 at 6pm
KQED co-production Hope Along the Wind: The Life of Harry Hay showcases the historically relevant life of a local pioneer in the Gay community. This seminal documentary includes interviews with Harry Hay, as well as with other leaders and activists from the early days of the Gay rights movement. Airs Thursday, June 29 at 10pm, repeats Saturday, June 21 at 1am
As part of the month-long LGBT celebration, KQED has organized aspecial evening in honor of Bay Area community leaders. The event takes place Wednesday, June 25 at KQED Public Broadcasting Center from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and will honor four individuals who have given their time, creativity, and passion to the LGBT community. Throughout June special television interstitials, created by independent film and video producer Jim Yager, will profile the 2003 Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Month honorees and their achievements. They are: Brian Cheu, whose affiliations have included the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center, Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center, and Life Lobby; Gene Dermody, who has been involved with the Federation of Gay Games and has been a competitor, coach, and organizer in the Gay Games, in addition to being a teacher and author; Terry Person Harris, an activist with Community United Against Violence, San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium, Queer Youth Training Collaborative, and the Love and Justice Project; and Shana Naomi Krochmal, who, in addition to being a journalist and editor for such publications as VIBE and POZ, has worked with the STOP AIDS Project, National AIDS Communications Roundtable, and the Federal AIDS Partnership.
