| KQED Public Broadcasting Celebrates Black History Month Turning Spotlight On Culture and Contributions of African Americans |
San Francisco, California, January 21, 2003 -- KQED today announced its annual Black History Month celebration in February with dedicated programming and unique teaching resources provided by KQED Education Network. In commemoration of KQED's ongoing commitment to the celebration of the rich diversity of the Bay Area, KQED, Union Bank of California and California State Automobile Association will join together to honor outstanding Bay Area local heroes in a celebratory event on Thursday, February 6.
Headlined by the groundbreaking KQED national television presentation Africa in the Picture, the first national broadcast of a series of African-produced films premiering February 9 at noon, KQED also will broadcast such fare as The Marsalis Family: A Jazz Celebration, in which legendary teacher Ellis Marsalis is regaled by the performance of his sons, Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason; and Long Walk to Freedom, a documentary about the Civil Rights Movement. KQED Public Radio will broadcast, among other Black History Month related programming, As American As Apple Pie: How Segregation and Terror Lost, 1940-54, a documentary examining the African American struggle to obtain equality under the law, on February 1 at 1 p.m. For a complete schedule, including a KQED-produced Black Heritage Month Guide, visit KQED.org or call (415) 553-2860.
The celebration continues on Thursday, February 6, when seven Bay Area community leaders will be honored for their outstanding achievements at an awards ceremony held at KQED. Special television interstitials will air throughout the month profiling the 2003 Black History Month honorees and their community work. The 2003 honorees are: Dr. Daniel A. Collins, DDS, of Mill Valley; Frances Greene, Pittsburg Pre-School & Community Council, Inc., of Pittsburg; Rae Louise Hayward, The Art of Living Black, of Pinole; Elder Raymond E. Lankford, MSW, Healthy Oakland, of Oakland; Deborah R. Pitts, MPA, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and Youth Bridge, of Berkeley; Jason C. Stanford, Alameda County Public Health Department, of Oakland; and E.W. Wainwright, African Roots of Jazz Performing Arts Academy, of Oakland.
KQED Education Network continues to provide its series of learning tools for local teachers working with their students in the classroom through the initiative, Bay Area Mosaic. The program highlights films and accompanying online lessons that aid teachers during heritage months and throughout the year. For Black History Month, Bay Area Mosaic will feature Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords, a film about Black journalists and their role in forging a modern African-American identity. Online lessons and further information about workshops and videos for educators can be found at KQED.org/ednet.
