KQED Public Broadcasting Promotes Gerald Yaffee to Chief Financial Officer

San Francisco, California, July 19, 2001 -- Gerald (Jerry) Yaffee, controller of KQED Public Broadcasting in Northern California, was named chief financial officer by a unanimous vote by the executive committee of KQED's Board of Directors. Mary Bitterman, president and CEO of KQED, made the announcement today and his appointment is effective immediately. Yaffee's position entails supervision of finance, information technology, facilities and the chief broadcast technology officer. Yaffee succeeds Joseph Bruns, who recently took the position of chief operating officer of WETA in Washington, D.C.

"The Board considered Jerry's initiative in long-range planning for the Campaign for the Future, his knowledge of technology and his professional experience in a variety of management assignments before coming to KQED," said Bitterman. "His excellent performance as controller of KQED since March of 1999, his ability to mentor, supervise and interact with staff colleagues in a constructive and professional manner made him an ideal candidate for the position."

As controller, Yaffee managed the company's rapid growth of nearly 100% in two years, and implemented a cash management system and investment program that resulted in $1 million of interest revenue. Yaffee brings 29 years of experience to KQED as a corporate controller and was a former financial advisor to the Malaysian government. He received his MBA from the Haas Business School at the University of California at Berkeley.

KQED operates KQED Public Television 9, the nation's most-watched public television station, and Digital Television 30, Northern California's only public television digital signal; KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM, the most-listened-to public radio station in the nation; the KQED Education Network, which brings the impact of KQED to thousands of teachers, students, parents and media professionals through workshops, seminars and resources; and KQED.org, which harnesses the power of the Internet to bring KQED to communities across the Web.
