KQED New Media Partners With Tractor for Handheld Web Tour of Bay Area Parks for Outdoor Adventurers and Tourists

Based on KQED's BEAUTIFUL BAY AREA III High-Definition Production, New Hand-Held Media

Provides Interactive Visits to Golden Gate Park, Point Reyes National Park and Mount Diablo

San Francisco, California, December 17, 2001 -- Based on KQED Public Television's local high-definition production The Beautiful Bay Area III "Our Beautiful Parks," KQED New Media and Tractor (tractorstudios.com) have collaborated to expand the Web site, making it available to users of handheld devices. The handheld function furthers KQED's exploration of applications for new technologies, and to provide park enthusiasts and tourists with portable information about featured parks -- including history, environmental concerns and interesting characteristics unique to each area.

The Web site, located at kqed.org/bba, spotlights eight of the Bay Area's most beautiful parks including Point Reyes National Seashore, Samuel P. Taylor State Park, Mount Tamalpais State Park, Golden Gate Park, Tilden Recreational Park, Redwood Recreational Park, Mount Diablo State Park and Castle Rock State Park. Each stop on the Web tour includes a clip of the HDTV program (available in dial-up and broadband forms) and a number of details, facts and pertinent links to sites containing more information about each location.

"KQED Public Broadcasting is invested in exploring and nurturing the growth of our third media platform -- new media and the Web," said Richard Winefield, vice president of new media and educational services. "By experimenting and partnering in pilot projects such as Beautiful Bay Area interactive, KQED expands our mission of education, culture and citizenship to new audiences and users."

The Beautiful Bay Area III "Our Beautiful Parks" features 15 of the Bay Area's most beautiful parks, taking viewers on a non-narrated, dream-like journey along nature trails, placid lakes and mountaintops. The gorgeous scenery is enhanced by and set to some of the world's best-loved classical selections from Mozart, Schubert, Puccini, Vivaldi and others. Shot with the latest high-definition technology (HDTV), The Beautiful Bay Area III offers a crisp and exceptionally beautiful look at the parks that grace the Bay Area.

KQED operates KQED Public Television 9, the nation's most-watched public television station, and Digital Television 30, Northern California's only public television digital signal; KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM, the most-listened-to public radio station in the nation; the KQED Education Network, which brings the impact of KQED to thousands of teachers, students, parents and media professionals through workshops, seminars and resources; and KQED.org, which harnesses the power of the Internet to bring KQED to communities across the Web.
