KQED Launches New Educational Resources for Local Teachers

Bay Area Mosaic Program Offers Creative Classroom Tools for Exploring the Rich Diversity of the Bay Area

San Francisco, CA, January 23, 2001 -- KQED Education Network has announced the launch of a new series of educational resources called Bay Area Mosaic for kindergarten through 12th grade teachers. Bay Area Mosaic will highlight films and accompanying online lessons reflecting the many cultures that make up the Bay Area.

In conjunction with KQED Black History Month celebrations, Bay Area Mosaic will feature Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords, a film about Black journalists and their role in forging a modern African-American identity. Online lessons for 9th- through 12th- grade teachers can be found at kqed.org/ednet. Lessons are correlated to California State standards for language arts, social studies and American democracy classes. Free workshops for educators will be held on Tuesday, January 30 from 4-6 p.m. at Oakland Museum of California, and on Thursday, February 1 from 4-6 p.m. at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco; participants will receive a free copy of the Black Press documentary. To register and/or find more information, interested teachers may call (415) 553-2293 or e-mail schoolservices@kqed.org.

Bay Area Mosaic will have educational resources for the upcoming Women's History and Asian Pacific American Heritage Months as the program explores the multi-cultural fabric that makes up the Bay Area. Other cultural heritage months will be highlighted as the program continues to grow.

Bay Area Mosaic is generously funded by a grant from the R. Gwin Follis Foundation and Chevron.
