State Legislature Convenes
For a brief time Monday there was celebration under the Capitol dome in Sacramento. But as new members of the California Legislature took the oath of office, storm clouds were already gathering.

Chevron Cleared in Human Rights Lawsuit
A San Francisco jury has cleared Chevron of all liability in a human rights lawsuit filed by Nigerian villagers. Ten years ago, the Nigerian military killed two villagers and injured others who were occupying a Chevron oil platform in the Niger Delta. The plaintiffs sued the San Ramon oil company under a statute that allows foreigners to file lawsuits in U.S. courts for alleged violations of international law.

Car Sales Down Again
The latest forecast from car industry watcher Edmunds.com shows November will add up to another bad month for the auto industry. While up slightly from October, final sales are expected to be down more than 27 percent from a year ago. California auto dealers have already suffered through a gas spike in the spring, and now the credit crisis and a general decline in consumer spending are pushing some dealers towards extinction.

In Monterey Bay, scientists have successfully launched an underwater laboratory that is unlike anything in the world. The $13 million dollar project is expected to revolutionize the way ocean research is done. Scientists ran 32 miles of cable out from the Monterey shoreline to power remote research equipment such as robots, seismometers and real-time video of a world deep below the ocean.
