Santa Clara County Needs More Emergency Home Providers

Children’s Services in Santa Clara County says it needs more people who are willing to provide emergency homes for children on a moment’s notice. The call for action comes in the wake of a stinging report by the County’s Juvenile Justice Commission.

The commission’s report called the county’s new foster care intake center cramped, unwelcoming and dangerous. Lori Medina heads the Department of Children’s Services. She says most of the issues raised by the report have already been addressed. And she hopes the attention on the department raises public awareness.

“The good that could come from this is that community members will respond to the call for opportunities to provide a home for kids who have high needs,” Medina says.

Medina says the move to a smaller intake facility last month reflects the shift from operating a large-scale shelter to placing children quickly into home-like environments.
