Deal Near for New Facebook Campus

The Menlo Park City Council is considering the details of an agreement with Facebook over the development of the company’s west campus--across the street from the current site on Willow Road. Unlike the first phase, the new phase is expected to transform the local landscape.

Under the development agreement,  Facebook has agreed to pay the city $1.5 million over the next 10 years to offset sales taxes that could be generated by other uses.  But the most visible aspect is construction of the 10-acre Frank Gehry-designed building.

Councilwoman Kirsten Keith says that it doesn’t make a giant architectural statement,  "I would say like the Bilbao design in Spain," Keith says. "But it’s a more subtle and graceful design statement having this huge roof full of trees and landscape."

The agreement also puts a cap on the number of daily vehicle trips, and provides for public access to green space and trails.
