Oakland's Municipal ID Cards Come Out Next Month

The City of Oakland is finalizing details on its new municipal ID cards.

Many cities issue their own IDs for undocumented immigrants to show police, but Oakland's card also doubles as a debit card.

Mayor Jean Quan says she plans to get one.  "Partly just because I like having a debit card that's an Oakland debit card," she says. "And we're hoping that we'll get some merchants and others to give discounts to Oaklanders."

The card will include a photo, but won't list the cardholder's gender.  That's in response to concerns from transgender advocates.

The card provider, University National Bank, will open its first office at Oakland's Municipal Credit Union.  Cards should start going out next month.
