Silicon Valley Impacted By Pending Federal Immigration Bill

Listen to the audio:

On Capitol Hill, the Senate will soon take up an immigration reform bill that directly affects Silicon Valley. Republican lawmakers recently passed a House bill called the STEM Jobs Act. "STEM" stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The bill would provide tens of thousands of green cards for immigrants who earn doctorate or master's degrees in STEM professions, rather than putting them through a lottery with other applicants. The Obama administration opposes this bill, partly because it does not provide a comprehensive immigration reform package.

One critic who's spoken out on the need for immigration reform that helps Silicon Valley is Vivek Wadhwa, vice president of academics and innovation at Singularity University near Mountain View. Wadhwa also holds academic posts at Stanford, Duke and Emory Universities. Listen here to his conversation with KQED's Joshua Johnson.
