Michelle Obama to Honor Oakland Non-Profit with Youth Arts Award

On Monday morning, First Lady Michelle Obama will honor Oakland-based Youth Radio for connecting young people to the arts.

The nonprofit is one of 12 winners of this year's National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.

Youth Radio's managing editor Rebecca Martin says her student-artists often take creative journeys they did not expect.
"You may come in with one thing in mind," Martin says, "and really discover a whole other side of yourself. These young people transform themselves, becoming more confident, feeling like their voices are heard, and creating pathways and careers for themselves."

Youth Radio has also won journalism awards for its student reporting.

Last year they won a Peabody Award for their investigation of teen prostitution in Oakland.
