Bay Area Democrats are among party members nationwide remembering George McGovern, the former South Dakota senator and 1972 presidential candidate, who died over the weekend.

McGovern ran on an anti-war platform against incumbent President Richard Nixon.

Former state Senator John Burton of San Francisco remembers McGovern's determination as it became apparent the election would go against him.

"We're talkin' and I said, 'How do you keep going?' and he said, 'I just cannot stand the thought of that man being president.' And he says, 'John it gets me up every morning to fight and fight and fight,' " Burton recalled.

McGovern won only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia as Nixon achieved one of the biggest landslides in history.
