Quan Optimistic About Plan to Reduce Oakland Crime
Oakland Mayor Jean Quan says she's optimistic that the city's latest campaign to deal with crime, Operation Ceasefire, is on the right track.
Last week, about two dozen gang members and other probationers were called in to meet with police, community organizations and faith leaders as part of the plan.
"And you basically say, we know who you are, we all know who you are, and we're going to be watching you and this is your chance to change your life," Quan said.
Quan said about half of those called in to the to meeting accepted help for getting back into school or finding a job.
Oakland police have reported 100 homicides this year, up 10 percent from last year, and spikes in other violent offenses and property crimes.
