Giants Win, Forcing Game Seven of Championship Series
The Giants are just one game away from returning to the World Series. After beating the Cardinals last night, they've tied the best-of-seven series that will determine the National League's champion to face Detroit.
Giants starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong threw the game of his career, striking out nine St. Louis batters. The Cardinals didn't get a hit until the 5th inning. Vogelsong exited the stadium in the 7th to chants of "Vogie, Vogie", and said after the game that the energy of the fans helped motivate him.
"The things they're doing for me, as far as their cheers and the chants, is making this something I'm never, ever going to forget," Vogelsong said. " And I can't thank them enough for that."
The Giants' ace pitcher Matt Cain will be on the mound for Game 7. But San Francisco has never won a deciding seventh game in any of its previous postseason appearances, losing the clincher of the World Series in 1912, 1924, 1962, and 2002, as well as the 1987 league championship series.
Still, Giants fan Rio Gonzalez of South San Francisco was confident his team could rewrite that history. " We got the momentum, the game is on -- it's over with," he said. "You're going to the World Series with Detroit. No doubt."
Game time Monday is 5:07 PM, weather permitting. Forecasters say the rain should taper off to occasional showers by then.
