California Raises Money for Romney

HOST: While the Bay Area's Democratic delegates rally at the party's convention in Charlotte, Republicans back from Tampa are at work raising money. As KQED's Stephanie Martin reports, even though Mitt Romney is not expected to win California, his supporters here are doing what they can to help him win elsewhere.

STEPHANIE MARTIN: Palo Alto resident Boyd Smith spent last week cheering on Mitt Romney at the Republican National Convention. Now he's back home and on the phone.

BOYD SMITH: (fragment) "...there's two events coming up, Robert, one is coming -- the one with Paul Ryan..."

MARTIN: Smith asks supporters with the deepest pockets to attend big-ticket fundraisers. Everyone else, he asks to give what they're able.

SMITH: "Some people say, 'I can only give five bucks.' I say 'listen, that's extremely important.' And the most important thing is for people to do what they can do."

MARTIN: Smith says he'd be surpised to see Romney and running mate Paul Ryan do any serious campaigning in California. They're scheduled for private functions, mostly at the homes of wealthy donors.

I'm Stephanie Martin, KQED News.
