Healthy Families Program Ending
The elimination of a popular state health insurance program for children will go forward as planned.
A last-minute effort to save the Healthy Families program failed to come to a vote in the Legislature last week.
Advocates for children’s health say the program's demise is a big loss for children from lower-income families.
But Vanessa Cajina with the Western Center on Law and Poverty says moving those kids into the state's Medi-Cal program for the poor may lead to better care in the long run.
“We have an opportunity to move forward collectively together,” Cajina says. “I think it's going to be important to make sure that the provider networks are in place, that there's a smooth transition, that kids don't see a disruption in coverage.”
The 900,000 children enrolled in Healthy Families will move to Medi-Cal in January.
