Republican Newcomer Gill Has the Floor in Tampa, Briefly
Ricky Gill, the Republican candidate in California's 9th Congressional District, spoke Tuesday afternoon at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.
On KQED's Forum program Tuesday morning, Gill said via phone from Tampa that his appearance at the convention is a validation of his effort.
“It reflects very well on this campaign that we have a competitive drive, an opportunity to win. But more importantly an opportunity to really reclaim some relevance I think for the party in California,” says Gill. “There's been some despondency of late, and we're definitely energetic and adding something to the brand.”
Gill, a political newcomer, is the third Indian-American to address the Republican National Convention, after Governors Nikki Haley and Bobby Jindal. The 25-year-old faces Democratic incumbent Jerry McNerney in November’s election for the Central Valley seat. Redistricting, and impressive fundraising by Gill, has made the race unexpectedly challenging for McNerney.
