Stockton Congressional Candidate to Speak at GOP Convention
Next week a candidate for California's 9th Congressional District will take the stage at the Republican National Convention in Florida. It's another move by the GOP to promote Ricky Gill, its rising star from the San Joaquin Valley.
Gill is just 25 years old, he's Indian-American, and he's raised more money than incumbent Democratic Rep. Jerry McNerney.
"I think we're in a winnable race," Gill says. "I think this is an opportunity for folks in the party to show a changing dynamic on the West Coast, and we're happy to be a part of it."
Gill is a "Young Gun
," as was GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan. It's an elite program run by the National Republican Congressional Committee that advances the careers of promising young conservatives. Lauren Smith, a McNerney spokeswoman, says Gill's appearance in Tampa helps provide voters with a clear choice.
"Having Ricky speak at the convention ... this proves that he's a true right wing conservative whose going to follow his party leadership and their very conservative agenda," Smith says.
The 9th District race is widely seen as competitive, and Republicans have targeted the seat.
