Fewer Schools Eligible for Cal Grant Program

Students who thought they were eligible for the Cal Grant program should check a list of schools released today by the California Student Aid Commission.

Of the 170 for-profit schools that participate in the state financial aid program, 137 are on a list showing they do not meet tougher standards passed by the legislature in June.

The changes affect more than 14,000 students, most of them enrolled in for-profit schools such as the University of Phoenix.

The rules were adopted to help address California's budget deficit.

The state's public universities and most nonprofit private colleges do meet the new standards for  graduation rates and student loan defaults.
