Facebook Keeping Mum on Site Geared for Kids
Facebook is telling members of congress it has not made a final decision on whether it will change its policy of restricting the site to users 13 and older. The social networking giant is responding to concerns sparked by recent reports that it's looking into creating an option for kids 12 and under.
In a carefully worded letter dated June 25, Facebook said if it decided to open up the site to younger children, it would work with lawmakers to ensure it is in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act, which regulates websites' use of personal information.
Most of Facebook’s letter details measures it says that it’s taking to protect minors. But studies show many children 12 and under already have Facebook accounts – often with the assistance of their parents. Facebook said it is evaluating that research as it moves forward.
