Science, Art Meet in Golden Gate Bridge Moving Light Show

Listen to the audio:

From fireworks to dance performances and vintage car displays, Sunday's 75th Golden Gate Bridge anniversary celebration has something for everyone -- even science geeks.

Scientists and engineers from UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Lab are mounting mirrors called heliostats on the bridge, in order to create a moving light show visible from many parts of the Bay. The project, called Solar Beacon, is the brainchild of UC researcher John Vallerga, who normally spends his time building instruments that fly aboard spacecraft like the Hubble Telescope.
