Southern California Fires -- Winds Die Down

Firefighters in Southern California got a big hand today from mother nature. The Santa Ana winds that have driven fires in Los Angeles, Orange and Santa Barbara Counties have died down, giving fire teams a chance to increase their containment of the blazes.

A new UC Berkeley study finds that $2.5 trillion worth of California real estate is at risk from wildfires, sea level rise and extreme weather linked to global warming. We talk to the authors of the study, who advocate turning the threat into an opportunity for economic renewal.

Shrinking Glaciers

Snow has once again returned to the Sierra Nevada, and that's good news -- not only for skiers but for the more than 400 glaciers that dot the range. Over hundreds of years, the annual snows have kept California's glaciers intact. But as we found on a recent expedition to Yosemite, that may be changing.

A Long, Dry Season

If this fire season doesn't prove to be the worst on record for California, it'll be close. It may top last year's, which was the worst in a decade. With wildfires becoming more frequent and more ferocious throughout the state, the term "fire season" itself may be growing obsolete.

The Financial Crisis and California's Energy Policies

The current financial crisis is raising questions about the future of California's global warming policies. However, a new report from UC Berkeley says the state's energy policies will boost the economy by creating an estimated 400,000 new jobs.

Disappearing Plants

Fires aren't the only thing changing California's landscape. Biologists say rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns could bring most of the state's native plants to near-collapse. Many of them, including the Giant Sequoia, are found nowhere else in the world.

The state's latest plan to tackle climate change is getting mostly positive reviews. Many are applauding the leadership role that California has taken with its aggressive plan to reduce carbon emissions. Others think it needs to go further still.

Air Regulators Push for New Emissions Standards

California air regulators today released a final draft of a plan that calls for slashing greenhouse gas emissions in the state by about four tons per person. The plan calls for the auto industry to make cleaner cars, and for power plants to use more renewable energy. It also imposes an emissions cap on the state's major polluters.
