Emissions Regulation Battle Heats Up
California officials are charging that new U.S. fuel economy rules contain an assault on the state's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Yesterday, the Bush administration announced proposals to raise fuel economy standards for cars and trucks. That pleased some environmentalists, but the proposal would also preempt "any state [regulation of] tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles."
