Whats for Lunch
Whats for Lunch -- Take a look at what's served in a school lunchroom and you'll see U.S. farm policy. With tater tots, chicken nuggets and fruit cups served as approved food from the USDA, lunchrooms that want to serve fresh food run into trouble. This is a picture of the Farm Bill -- where a few crops (mainly corn and soy) are heavily subsidized and fresh vegetables and fruits are not. Researchers point to the glut of corn, seen in forms like high fructose corn syrup, saying it's no coincidence the U.S. has seen epidemics of obesity and heart disease thanks to this constant supply of cheap calories. The Farm Bill, re-approved every 5 years, comes up this fall.
