San Jose Wrestles with Crippling Budget Shortfall
The city of San Jose continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the Bay Area, with a population soon expected to pass the 1 million mark. But since the dot-com bust, the city has struggled every year under a crippling budget deficit and has balanced the budget through temporary hiring freezes. This week, San Jose officials will be grappling with a $16 million shortfall, and city officials have to come up with a balanced budget in time to start the new fiscal year July 1.
