Checkerspot Butterfly Returns to San Mateo County
A sure sign of spring in San Mateo County was once the emergence of the Bay Checkerspot Butterfly. But the butterfly became
extinct in this area after a wave of freeway construction. Now, after a six-year absence, the Checkerspot, known for its orange,
red and white markings, has returned to Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve.
