New Tunnel Slated for Highway 1
An infamous stretch of Highway 1 is on its way to becoming the site of California's first new tunnel in nearly half a century. Devil's Slide on the San Mateo County Coast is a 1.5-mile precarious drive along a cliff's edge that connects San Francisco to Half Moon Bay. The panoramic route has often been closed due to landslides. But work is underway to create a permanent and expensive detour.
