Indian Site Could Soon Be Under Rising Waters of Shasta Lake
A small Indian tribe in Northern California is in a race against time and the federal government. Years ago, Shasta Dam flooded lands sacred to the Winnemen Wintu Tribe. Now the U.S. wants to raise the dam to increase water storage, but that would flood still more sacred lands, including Puberty Rock, a site where one young Winnemen Wintu girl is working to revive a traditional coming-of-age ceremony.
