Día De los Niños/Día De los Libros, Oakland -- May 2011

This year marks the fourth anniversary for Oakland's "Día de Los Niños, Día de Los Libros" celebration. Oakland Parks and Recreation, Unity Council, and KQED Education hosted an afternoon of children's activities and books featuring multicultural music, dance, storytelling, art activities, and a book giveaway. The Unity Council AmeriCorps Program also kicked off AmeriCorps Week at the event.

El Día de los Niños Literacy Event @ Carmen Flores Recreation Center is a yearly celebration of children and books. Rooted in a Latin American tradition, it is a child-centered event with the goals of promoting literacy and unifying families of all cultures. Oakland's first Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros was in 2007, and each year the event grows in attendance and collaboration. Our 2010 celebration was attended by over 400 children and their families who enjoyed diverse performance groups, storytellers, literacy-related arts and crafts, and a culturally relevant complimentary book. This year's event reinforces the importance of the community's role in fostering children's love for reading.
