The One About A New Jazz Hall and SF Sketchfest

Cy Musiker and Peter Hartlaub scout the Bay Area for things to do this coming weekend and turn up a new jazz hall, heaps of Sketchfest, and much more!

Tim Flannery

January 23 - 27, 2013
Various Bay Area locations

You're lucky to be really good at one thing in your life. Show-off Tim Flannery is good at at least two things: he's the third base coach for the SF Giants and is also a longtime bluegress/country singer with over ten albums under his belt. And add humanitarian in there; Flannery is staging a series of benefits for Bryan Stow, a Giants fan who was brutally beaten by Dodgers fans last year. Support a worthy cause while taking in some great tunes when Flannery plays Freight and Salvage in Berkeley on the 23rd, the Fox in Redwood City on January 24th, Sweet Water Music Hall in Mill Valley on the 25th, Napa's Uptown Theater on the 26th, and Kuumba Jazz Theater in Santa Cruz on the 27th. For tickets and more information, visit timflannery.com.

Museum Hopping

January 19, 2013
Various Bay Area locations

Being enlightened can be an expensive habit (tuition! museum entry fees!). While going to college is still a kick to the piggy bank, 11 Bay Area museums are making sure going to the museum of your choice isn't. January 19th is being called Member for a Day and it's just that: one day where a membership to any of the following museums gets you in for free to any of the others: the Asian Art Museum, the Cartoon Art Museum, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Museum of the African Diaspora, Oakland Museum of California, SF Camerawork, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Walt Disney Family Museum, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. For more information, visit ybca.org.

SF Jazz Center Opening

January 25, 2013
SF Jazz Center

Franklin Street is about to get a lot jazzier! After an investment of $65 million, the SF Jazz Center is set to become the only center of its kind in the country! The first two nights are already sold out, but there are still tickets for a show on the 25th featuring McCoy Tyner, Esperanza Spaulding, Josh Redman, and more. For tickets and more information, visit sfjazz.org.

SF Sketchfest 2013

January 24 - February 10, 2013
Various Bay Area locations

Embarrassment of riches is putting it mildly, when it comes to this year's SF Sketchfest line-up. Maya Rudolph covers Prince songs with her cover band Princess! The cast of Pete and Pete reunite after 20 years! Heather Matarazzo leads a Welcome to the Dollhouse experience! Tributes to beloved shows Portlandia and Party Down. And the list goes on and on. For tickets and more information, visit sfsketchfest.com.

Ty Segall

January 18, 2013
The Fillmore

Ty Segall sings, drums, plays guitar, and is part of a half dozen bands. And he's only 25. Talk about being a go-getter! Ty plays the Fillmore on the 18th. For tickets and more information, visit livenation.com.
