The One About Apartheid and Rock And Brew

Cy Musiker and David Wiegand scout the Bay Area for things to do this coming weekend and turn up a jazz on the couch, a beer and brew festival, and much more!

Tessa Souter

December 2, 3, and 6, 2012
Various Bay Area locations

According to the Chicago Examiner, "singers like [Tessa Souter] don't come along every day." So why waste another not seeing her live? Lucky for you, there are several chances to do just that in the coming week: Sunday at Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay, Monday at the Pink House in Saratoga, and Thursday at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. For tickets and more information, visit tessasouter.com.

Richmond Art Center Holiday Arts Festival

December 2, 2012
The Richmond Art Center

In honor of their first fest in 1961, the Richmond Art Center's holiday arts festival will have a '60s theme this year! They are encouraging guests to channel their inner Dons and Peggys and dress for the occasion. Beyond the sartorial flashback, there will be art vendors, live music, a fine art and craft auction, kids' art activities, a ceramics sale, and more. A portion of sales will benefit the RAC. Everyone wins! For more information, visit therac.org.

Berkeley Community Chorus

December 2, 2012
Joseph the Worker Church

Death is such a jerk. He famously cut Mozart off before he could finish Requiem, but also interrupted the completion of the lesser known Great Mass in C Minor. The Berkeley Community Chorus will be giving the latter the attention it deserves at a free concert at Joseph the Worker Church in Berkeley Sunday at 4:30pm. For more information, visit bcco.org.

Denny Zeitlin

December 1, 2012
Piedmont Piano

Most of us are lucky to find one passion in life. Denny Zeitlin has at least two. A psychiatrist by day, he's also made a name for himself in the jazz world. Check him out for an evening of jazz standards, original compositions, and free improvisation at the Piedmont Piano. For tickets and more information, visit piedmomtpiano.com.

South Africa in Apartheid and After

December 1, 2012 - March 5, 2013
SFMoMA

Three photographers tackle the difficult period of apartheid in South Africa from different vantage points. David Goldblatt, the son of Eastern European immigrants, documents his view of the racial inequality, Ernest Cole, a self-taught black South African documentary photographer, shows the other side of the racial divide, while Billy Monk adds some wit with his documentation of his time spent as a bouncer at The Catacombs, a rowdy Cape Town nightclub. For tickets and more information, visit sfmoma.org.

The Bay Brewed

December 1, 2012
Public Works

Local music mavens The Bay Bridged are giving SF an early holiday present with their Bay Brewed event. Bands like Bear in Heaven, Sonny and the Sunsets, and Born Gold will perform. And, as if that wasn't enough of a draw, there will be unlimited beer tasting. Clink! It all goes down tomorrow from 12:30pm to 6pm at Public Works. For tickets and more information, visit thebaybridged.com.

Kitka

November 30 and December 2, 7 - 9, 14, and 16, 2012
Various Bay Area locations

Choral group Kitka is bringing the Balkans to your eardrums with their holiday show celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas. They are playing tons of shows in the Bay Area so there is no good excuse no to see them. They will be at the Miner's Foundry in Nevada City on November 30th, Arts at St. Bede's in Menlo Park on December 2nd, St. Paul's Church in Oakland on the 7th, the Old First Church in SF on the 8th, Nile Hall in Oakland on the 9th, Gualala Arts in Gualala on the 14th, and the Arcata Playhouse in Arcata on the 16th.
