The One About Bloody Andrew and Island Treasure

Cy Musiker and David Wiegand scout the Bay Area for things to do this coming weekend and turn up a bloody musical, some treasure, and much more!

Tift Merritt

October 18, 2012
Cafe du Nord

For a period of time, Tift Merritt thought she was better suited to be a short story writer, which she explored by studying creative writing at UNC. Eventually, the musicality instilled in her by her father caught up with her and now she's bringing her storytelling to music that some have compared to Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris. Hurray for career swaps! Tift Merritt plays Cafe du Nord in San Francisco this Thursday. For tickets and more information, visit cafedunord.com.

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson

October 9 - November 24, 2012
SF Playhouse

Abe Lincoln might be getting the Spielberg treatment, but Andrew Jackson is also getting some creative attention with Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, a rock musical by Michael Friedman that portrays Jackson as an emo rock star (why not?). The show will open SF Playhouse's 10th season at their brand new theatre on Post Street in SF. Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson runs through November 24, 2012. For tickets and more information, visit sfplayhouse.org.

Trio Solisti

October 12 - 14, 2012
Various Bay Area locations

Whoever said three's a crowd obviously never heard Trio Solisti play. Considered one of the great American chamber groups, these three will bring the music of Dvorak, Beethoven, and more to life at the Sunset Theatre in Carmel tonight, at Le Petit Trianon in San Jose tomorrow, and at Mt. Tamalpais Church in Mill Valley on Sunday. For tickets and more information, visit triosolisti.com.

Treasure Island Music Festival 2012

October 13 - 14, 2012
Treasure Island

You've always meant to visit that little artificial lily pad in the middle of the bay, but haven't been able to find a good enough reason to make the jaunt. Well, look no further; it's Treasure Island Music Festival weekend! In addition to epic views of the city and a crazy cool Burning Man-esque sculptures, dozens of music's hippest acts will grace the festival's two stages on Saturday and Sunday. Highlights include indie darling Joanna Newsom, The xx, M83, Gossip, and even Public Enemy. Time for a field trip! For tickets and more information, visit treasureislandfestival.com.

Bettye LaVette

October 14 - 15, 2012
Yoshi's

Bettye LaVette might be 66 years old, but that doesn't appear to be slowing her down any. She has a new memoir out called A Woman Like Me, as well as a brand new covers albums, on which she puts her spin on Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and the Black Keys. Catch Bettye LaVette at Yoshi's in Oakland on Sunday and Yoshi's SF branch on Monday. For tickets and more information, visit yoshis.com.

Lenora Lee Dance

October 12 - 14, 2012
ODC

To celebrate five years of being a dance company, Lenore Lee Dance is celebrating the occasion with an ambitious program that addresses the Chinese-American experience. Genny Lim brings the text and jazz saxophonist Francis Wong the music, with some help from martial arts dojos! Check it out at ODC in San Francisco Friday through Sunday. For tickets and more information, visit lenoraleedance.com.
