Dan White is a San Francisco-based journalist, author, freelance editor and writing lecturer. White's first book, The Cactus Eaters is a chronicle of his harrowing attempt to through-hike the Pacific Crest Trail with his then-girlfriend. The two undertake this beautiful but strenuous 2,650-mile journey from Mexico to Canada with scant experience and a heaping pile of expensive gear. A real-life dark comedy about a vision quest that goes ridiculously awry in the wild American West, the book draws on diaries White kept at the time. According to the Kirkus Review, "White polishes up these memories, serving them forth with brio and dash, [bringing] a fresh perspective to the timeworn adventure-travel genre."
