Needles and Pens

In 2002, fanzine enthusiast Andrew Scott joined forces with Strandid Clothing designer Breezy Culbertson to form a new type of retail space. The result is Needles and Pens, a wildly popular, hip place in the Mission selling home-made goods and home-published zines, and exhibiting artwork. They stock great gift items (wallets, t-shirts, jewelry, cards, etc.) that are mostly made by local artists. On top of that they present monthly art shows.
Monica Canilao earned B.F.A. in illustration from the California College of Arts and Crafts. Based out of Oakland, she relies heavily on reuse -- creating her collages and sculptures from found paper, fabric and other materials. In her solo show "The Dispossessed," at Needles and Pens from December 2, 2006 through January 2007, she speaks to the human capacity to adapt and grow through good, bad, and worse.
