Front Gallery
View Gallery Crawl video of Breathe: Light sculpture by David Meeker (October 6 through December 2, 2006) at Front Gallery. (Running Time: 4:43)
Located near the 19th Street BART station, the Front Gallery opened its doors in February 2006. This airy art space is run by owner and curator Bob Jew, who supports Front through revenue generated from his business (studio:photography) run out of the same space. Front has rotating exhibitions featuring artists working in a variety mediums, disciplines and formats as well as guest curators who bring in additional perspectives representing the Bay Area contemporary art scene.
David Meeker earned a B.A. in sculpture from San Francisco State in 1984. In Meeker's solo exhibition entitled "Breathe" (October 6 through December 2, 2006), kinetic constructions made from recycled materials greet you as you walk through the door in a Mad Max meets Captain Kangaroo way. Using items like plastic grocery bags, cardboard box, condoms and chunky hardware, Meeker has named the machines in this show, "air fountains," all of which seem to breahe while going through a cycle of expansion and contraction.
