Blankspace
View Gallery Crawl video of Secret Nature new work by Misako Inaoka (October 21 through November 19, 2006) at the Blankspace gallery. (Running Time: 6:21)
Right on the border between Oakland and Emeryville, Blankspace occupies the space that used to be the Lucky Tackle Gallery. The new gallery is comprised of a main exhibition room and a small store in the front devoted to an eclectic mix of original artist-made goods and serial pieces. Run by artists Jason Byers and Kerri Johnson, Blankspace's focus is on exhibiting emerging artists in a wide range of media along with hosting events like Rock n' Roll Bingo and Bizarre Bazaar.
Despite her emerging artist status, Misako Inaoka, who earned an M.F.A. from Mills College in 2006, has already shown her work extensively in the United States and internationally (Japan and Italy). In her solo exhibit at the Blankspace gallery entitled "Secret Nature" (October 21 through November 19, 2006), Inaoka constructs environments that are hybrid of the artificial and the actual. Using minuscule sculptures and interactive site-specific installations created out of items such as mechanical birds, plastic plants and branches, she encourages viewers to focus on the small details in their surroundings.
